Jeff Garzik believes NXT is a “SCAMCOIN”

Why Does Jeff Garzik Have a Beef with NXT?

Garzik took to Twitter and bitcointalk.org to talk about the shadiness of NXT as an alternative crypto-financial system. After being asked to explain himself on a bitcointalk.org thread, Garzik replied with the following list of issues:

It is marketed like a scammy penny stock.

Anon early super large stakeholders + Proof-Of-Stake == the big guys run the table, if they choose. https://download.wpsoftware.net/bitcoin/pos.pdf The central bankers are in place from Day One unless they are super-virtuous and give tons away “fairly.”

Anonymous developers

Closed developing process. Source is periodically handed down from the ivory tower to the masses.

Certain notable personages (& key stakeholders) that dodge, dodge, dodge, when an obvious attack vector — mitigated in other crypto-finance projects by known techniques — is highlighted.

Active resistance to making it easier to independently reproduce the software

Technical criticism is routinely met with bizarre behavior (notably from come-from-beyond)

Attacking critics, rather than responding to criticism.

Several security incidents that smell like inside jobs.

As you can see, there are many different aspects of the NXT development process that rub Jeff Garzik the wrong way. There aren’t many outside the NXT community who don’t see the correlations between their marketing practices and those of a penny stock, and many of our readers have probably come across the marketers who seem to do nothing but pump the proof-of-stake cryptocurrency on various forums and social media websites. A recent episode of Let’s Talk Bitcoin also rubbed me the wrong way when a member of the NXT community wasn’t really able to come up with any reasons for the altcoin to exist in the first place. The guest on Let’s Talk Bitcoin continually mentioned features that were either already implemented in Bitcoin or right around the corner for the world’s most popular cryptocurrency. I experienced this same phenomena when debating a NXT supporter on Twitter.

A Response from NXT

The NXT community was quick to respond to Garzik’s criticisms, and plenty of NXT supporters wanted to let the Bitcoin developer that he didn’t know what he was talking about. One of the main issues Garzik mentioned on Twitter is that the hashes didn’t match when he compared his own build of nxt.jar from source to the shipped version of nxt.jar that most of the NXT users download without thinking twice. Jean-Luc, the lead NXT developer, pointed out why this may have happened on the NXT forum:

“The reason for non-reproducible builds is that the jar packaging tool includes time dependent information in the jar archive, which depends not only on the timestamps of the class files being packaged but the time the package is built too. Different javac compilers and on different platforms may also result in different class files.”

This claim was also made by many other members of the NXT community, but it may not be completely accurate. Garzik was quick to point to a tutorial on how to create a deterministic JAR. The tutorial also pointed out that different builds of the JAR need to be made with the same compiler, so that aspect of Jean-Luc’s claim seemed to be accurate. It was at this point that it became clear that Garzik’s concerns were more about the centralization of the development process than anything else. This point of view was evident in one of Jeff’s earlier posts:

“What is necessary, for NXT or any other crypto-finance software, is to prove independent reproducibility. The next step is to proactively have developers and community members cross-check each other, to make sure the build produced is the same for all. This helps ensure that the release manager is not under duress, unknowingly infected with malware, or corrupt. No security solution is perfect, but it raises the bar significantly. You should never trust just one person to produce release binaries, in any crypto-finance project. That’s called a Single Point of Failure, and it is easy to attack such a narrow victim vector.”

The core of Garzik’s issues with NXT were also seen when he responded to @Thein_Sein on Twitter about whether or not calling the controversial altcoin an outright scam was taking it too far:

“When massive stakeholders push back this hard on a provable build process… run away.”

Appcoins Have Little Value Anyway

While, according to at least one Bitcoin core developer, there may or may not be foul play behind the scenes at NXT, the reality is that none of this really matters in the grand scheme of things. As Daniel Krawisz eloquently described in the appcoins debate on Let’s Talk Bitcoin, appcoins or altcoins should only rise in value with their respective networks if there is a reason to hold them. The comparative advantages of bitcoin as money over fiat and altcoins give people a reason to hold it, but these same arguments do not apply to appcoins like NXT. Users of the NXT token should want to hold the coin for the lowest amount of time possible because they don’t know how to value the asset. This is currently an issue with LTBcoin as well, but it seems that they have some changes on the way that could fix the problem. Having said that, this solution only applies to network coins that can fix the price of certain goods or services in terms of their own tokens.

Whether NXT plans to create a system of decentralized storage or they want to get people to use their decentralized asset exchange, the fact of the matter is any added value from those enhancements will go to bitcoin. Why would anyone hold NXT when they could hold a money with the liquidity, security, and network effects of bitcoin? They can take advantage of the features found in any appcoin’s network without taking on the volatility risk associated with holding that app’s token. Users may take advantage of a NXT feature for a brief moment in time, but money going in and out of the network does not increase the coin’s market cap. An increased price only takes place when people are holding the token in question.

Anoncoin and PurpleI2P

Orignal, a guy from Russia who prefers to stay anon for a while longer, who started the PurpleI2P project has read the Zerocoin papers and is joining in on it to speed it up, resulting in both Anoncoin with Zerocoin and PurpleI2P are done faster.

We’re discussing internally the change on KGW and will get back to that. We have also been talking about programming PurpleI2P in a way that we can have “libi2p” which can be built into Anoncoin, or connect to external instance if found. Many possibilities, which we discuss at the moment..

See more on https://privacysolutions.no/. We have also tweaked a bit on the itoopie logo, who also got a new name: “ICToopie”.

Lately I’ve done much “administrative” work regards to PS which includes all project there. The moving of BigBrother (my SSD is starting to reach critical level of little disk space), reviewing code on Repungo launcher, and a lot of talking with different people to get things going. Mostly the stuff I prefer to not do, rather than code. But I will be back on the code front myself real soon. Also note that this is a short post just to give the most vital information out, I will go in details later! Plus a lot is under discussion now that could become real nice, but I’m holding it to myself until I can confirm it. icon smile Anoncoin and PurpleI2P

As some of you know we do automatic builds of Anoncoin for Windows and Linux, and soon OSX at https://jenkins.nordcloud.no/. We will soon make daily builds downloadable for testers. The same goes for other PS projects or related.

Please also note that PurpleI2P is still under development and is not recommended for daily usage, since it still got privacy issues, also a lot essential is missing even we can use it to surf, chat on IRC etc with the current code in git.

Blackcoin Price Climbs

When it first burst onto the scene in the early part of 2014, many investors thought Blackcoin was a just pump and dump that would allow a few whales to make a quick profit at the expense of novice investors.

However, the Blackcoin developers and community have proven that charge false through their numerous innovations, which include a smart-contracts system and a dedicated multipool.

Shortly after its release, the Blackcoin price quickly rose to ~89,000 satoshis. As expected, the price crashed hard, falling to ~14,500 satoshis in 48 hours. Despite several brief pumps to 53,000 and 39,000 satoshis, respectively, the Blackcoin price has declined fairly linearly since April. Through most of August, the Blackcoin price fluctuated around the 8,300-8,600 satoshi mark.

The Blackcoin price entered September 9 at 8,682 satoshis, increasing to 8,744 by the end of the day. On September 10, the Blackcoin price went on an impressive rally, spiking to a high of 10,438, a 17% rise. After peaking at over 10,000 satoshis, the Blackcoin price began a slight decline. At present, the Blackcoin price is 9,736 satoshis, which represents a nearly 14% increase over the preceding 24 hours.

Blackcoin Investment Advice

CoinGecko ranks Blackcoin 12th among cryptocurrencies according to its comprehensive metric algorithm, which analyzes a coin’s developer activity, community interaction, and exchange liquidity. At 35%, Blackcoin’s exchange liquidity is relatively low, which is likely due to its Proof of Stake distribution model, which encourages investors to stake their coins to avoid demurrage. Blackcoin’s community interaction score is 42%, which outpaces coins in Blackcoin’s vicinity on the CoinGecko charts, but is still lower than desirable. Blackcoin has a respectable developer activity score of 62%, bringing the coin’s overall score to 47% (Only Dogecoin has as score higher than 70%, highlighting how volatile altcoins remain in general).

Of course, Blackcoin’s developer score does not account for the myriad of Blackcoin developments that occur outside the source code, such as BlackHalo, a smart contracts platform, and the Blackcoin Pool, a multipool that places consistent buy pressure on Blackcoin exchanges. While developments such as these do not factor into Blackcoin’s CoinGecko score, investors should take them into consideration as they plan their investments.

SysyCoin big marketing push

A big update was posted about the roadmap, their funding through Moolah.io and a new exchange has been added to the list.

A new feature coming to SysCoin is called Name Alias. Even though this feature has been on the roadmap for a while, it has been moved up on the priority list. It just makes the concept of using SYS much easier and more flexible.

As the name suggest, this feature allows for users to both send and receive SysCoin using an alias. Kind of like an anonymity/user privacy feature, which is a good thing. This feature is expected to be released September 21st.

A major promotional and marketing campaign has kicked off as well, as different strategies will be used to bring more awareness to SysCoin over the next month. One of the confirmed partners in this campaign are our friends over at ThisWeeksCoin.com.

I did mention SysCoin has been added to a new exchange, called AllCoin. Having more exchanges where people can buy and trade your altcoin is never a bad thing! It will be interesting to see whether AllCoin will generate a decent Bitcoin trading volume though.

NeosCoin V2 Coding Update

Once the NEOS v2 client is released, multiple languages will be supported. English (duh), French and Dutch are confirmed at this point.

If you speak a language which could be beneficial to have in the new client, get in touch with the NeosCoin developers asap.

Another feature include in the upcoming NeosCoin client will be in-wallet trading. which will be done using the Poloniex trading API. Coding of the in-wallet trading feature has been completed according to the developers, which is good news.

The last announced feature (as of this writing that is) is an in-wallet block explorer for NeosCoin. This removes the need of using external parties or websites to check network information, and is a feature we have seen adopted by multiple other altcoins.

MidasCoin

Some bad news is coming from the MidasCoin corner. Apparently, all mining has been halted and the Gold Reserve is no longer being increased as we speak.

The developers are working on an emergency patch to fix some issues.

Poop hit the fan late last night it seems, as several people started trashing MidasCoin on BitcoinTalk. As this is nothing new in the world of cryptocurrency and altcoins, this is not the main cause for this pause in services.

A coordinated network attack was executed , with over 2,000 peers inflating a blank blockchain. Do not be alarmed, as they completely failed to generate any coins, which strikes me as unusual, but we’ll have to take the developer’s word for it at this point. No user balances were affected during this attack, and all coins are accounted for.

A discussion between the MidasCoin developer and early MID adopters ensued , and it was decided to pause all MidasCoin services for the time being. The developers are working on a full patch to fix all the issues, but no official ETA was given at this point.

If you are/were mining MidasCoin , please stop your rigs until further notice. The current round of mining shares will end once all miners have stopped mining. The MID Gold Reserve increments have also been paused for the time being, and will be resumed once it is safe to mine again.
